TikTok Spark Ads let you put ad spend behind a real TikTok post, either one from your own account or one made by a creator, instead of uploading a separate ad. For brands working with creators, that's the most direct way to turn a post that's already working into an ad that keeps working. This guide covers how Spark Ads differ from regular ads, how the Spark Ads code works, what to agree with the creator, and how to choose posts worth boosting.
What Spark Ads are
TikTok describes Spark Ads as a native ad format that lets you "leverage organic TikTok posts and their features in your advertising." Two details matter most for brands:
- You can use creators' posts. Besides your own account's posts, TikTok lets you run ads using organic posts made by other creators, with their authorization.
- Engagement stays with the post. Views, likes, comments, shares and follows gained while a Spark Ad runs are attributed to the original organic post, according to TikTok.
| Spark Ad | Regular in-feed ad | |
|---|---|---|
| What runs | An existing organic post | A video uploaded as an ad |
| Whose account it appears from | The post's owner, such as the creator | Your brand's ad identity |
| Where engagement goes | The original post | The ad |
| Needs creator permission | Yes, via an authorization code | Only if you use their footage |
Because the ad appears from the creator's account, it looks and feels like the rest of their content. That's the whole point, and it's also why the agreement with the creator matters.
How to get a Spark Ads code from a creator
The creator generates the code on the post itself, and you apply it in TikTok Ads Manager. According to TikTok's help center, the flow on the creator's side is:
- Open the video in the TikTok app.
- Tap the three dots on the video.
- Tap Ad settings.
- Turn on ad authorization, choose how long it lasts, and tap Generate to get the post code.
The creator then sends you the code. In Ads Manager, you add it to your Spark Ads posts, check the authorization period shown under the post, and select it when you build the ad.
You can also skip the back-and-forth: TikTok's Content Suite has a Request authorization button that messages the creator through TikTok, and those requests default to a 365-day authorization period, per TikTok's help center.
What to agree with the creator before you spend
A Spark Ad uses the creator's post and identity, so settle these points up front:
- Usage window. How long you can run the post as an ad. Match it to the authorization period on the code.
- Fee. Paid usage is usually priced on top of the original post. Meta, for its own partnership ads, tells creators they can negotiate higher pay for those extra usage rights, and the same logic applies on TikTok.
- Approvals. Agree which post or posts can be boosted and whether you can pick new ones later.
- Comments. Comments from ad viewers land on the creator's post. Agree how you'll handle questions and negative comments together.
- Keeping the post live. Ask the creator not to delete or edit the post while the ad runs.
- Exclusivity. If the creator shouldn't promote a competitor while your ad is live, write it down and price it in.
- Disclosure. The post should already be labeled as branded content or an ad, as the platform and local rules require.
Our UGC contract creator turns these points into a simple agreement you can send with the brief.
Picking creator posts worth boosting
Ad spend amplifies whatever is already there, good or bad. Before you boost a post, check:
- Organic performance against the creator's average. A post that beat the creator's usual views has already passed the hardest test.
- Retention. Ask the creator for a screenshot of the post's watch-time and retention from TikTok analytics. Strong retention matters more than likes.
- The first two seconds. If the hook doesn't stop you scrolling, it won't stop strangers either.
- Early product visibility. The product should appear early and clearly, not in the last second.
- Comments that ask where to buy. That's real purchase intent, and it's visible right under the post.
- Shelf life. Avoid posts tied to a date, a trend that has faded or an offer that has ended.
Measuring results
Spark Ads report in Ads Manager like any other ad, so judge them on the same metrics as your other campaigns: click-through rate, cost per click, conversions and cost per result. Then compare:
- Against your own brand ads. Is the creator post cheaper per result than your in-house creative?
- Across creators. Which creators' posts convert best? Book them again.
- Over time. Watch frequency and cost per result as the ad runs. When performance fades, rotate in a new post rather than raising the budget.
Remember that likes, comments and follows from the ad accrue to the creator's post. That's a benefit you can offer creators when you negotiate.
Finding creators whose posts are worth boosting
The best Spark Ads start with creators whose organic posts already perform. Look for creators with steady average views relative to followers, engaged comments and past promotions in your category. topYappers lets you search TikTok creators by niche, country, average views, engagement and the products they've already promoted. Frequently asked questions
What is a Spark Ads code?
A code a creator generates from a TikTok post's ad settings that lets an advertiser run that post as a Spark Ad. The creator chooses how long the authorization lasts, and the advertiser applies the code in TikTok Ads Manager.
How do I get a Spark Ads code from a creator?
Ask the creator to open the post, tap the three dots, go to Ad settings, turn on ad authorization, pick the duration and tap Generate, then send you the code. Agree the usage window and fee first.
Do creators get paid for Spark Ads?
Usually, yes. Running a creator's post as an ad is extra usage on top of the original post, and it's commonly priced separately. Agree the fee and window before they share the code.
Where does engagement from a Spark Ad go?
According to TikTok, views, likes, comments, shares and follows from a Spark Ad are attributed to the original organic post, so the creator's post keeps the engagement.
