If you're wondering how to find influencers on Instagram, the short answer is: search the way your customers do, follow the brands your customers already buy, and let good creators lead you to more good creators. This guide covers seven methods, from Instagram's own search to influencer databases, then how to vet a creator and whether to DM or email.
1. Instagram search
Instagram's search bar finds accounts, keywords, places and tags. Two habits make it work for finding creators:
- Search phrases, not categories. "Easy high protein meals" or "capsule wardrobe" surfaces people who make that content. "Fitness" or "fashion" mostly surfaces celebrities.
- Check the accounts tab. Many creators put their niche in their name field ("Anna | Vegan recipes"), which makes them easy to find by keyword.
2. Hashtags
Hashtags are less central than they used to be, but niche tags still group creators who post on a topic regularly. Use specific tags, look at recent posts rather than only the top ones, and note accounts that appear more than once.
3. Reels and Explore
Reels and Explore show you what's working right now. Engage with a few posts in your niche and both feeds quickly fill with similar creators, including smaller ones you'd never find through search. When a Reel in your niche stands out, check the account: a creator whose recent Reels perform consistently is worth a closer look.
4. Accounts your competitors tag
Open a competitor's profile and look at the posts it's tagged in. Creators who tag a brand like yours have shown their audience buys in your category. You'll also see which ones work with competitors repeatedly, which tells you who might be under exclusivity. Paid partnership labels and discount codes in captions are the clearest signs of a real deal.
5. Lookalikes of creators you already like
Once you have one great creator, use them to find more:
- Look at the suggested accounts Instagram shows when you follow them.
- Check who they follow in your niche.
- Read their comments: other creators often comment on each other's posts.
Good creators cluster, so each one you find makes the next one easier.
6. Instagram's creator marketplace
Instagram runs a creator marketplace where creators who opt in can be discovered by brands for branded content. It's worth a look if you're eligible, with one limit: it only includes creators who have joined, and many good creators haven't.
7. An Instagram influencer database
When you need many creators, or creators in a specific country, follower range or niche, a database is faster than any manual method. In topYappers you can search Instagram creators by niche, country, follower range, average views, engagement and the brands they've already promoted, and see which ones have a contact email. Our Instagram creator database page explains how it works, and our fitness influencers list shows the data in action.
A 30-minute Instagram search routine
If you've never searched for creators before, this routine gets you a solid first shortlist in half an hour:
- Five minutes: list your search terms. Write ten phrases your customers would use, plus five niche hashtags and three competitors.
- Ten minutes: search and save. Run each phrase and hashtag, open recent posts and save every account that posts on the topic regularly. Aim for 20 to 30 candidates.
- Five minutes: check competitor tags. Add creators tagged by your competitors, noting who looks like a paid partner.
- Five minutes: expand with lookalikes. Open your three best candidates and add strong accounts from their suggestions and comments.
- Five minutes: cut the list. Remove accounts with weak recent Reel views, generic comments or no posts in the last month.
You'll usually end with 10 to 15 creators worth contacting. Repeat the routine each week with new terms and your list keeps growing.
Vetting Instagram creators
Instagram makes it easy to look big. Before you reach out, check:
- Reel views against followers. Open the last ten Reels. Consistent views are a much better sign than a big follower count.
- Comments. Real questions and replies, not strings of emojis from accounts with no posts.
- Follower growth. Sudden jumps with no viral post to explain them can mean bought followers.
- Past partnerships. Look for paid partnership labels and see how those posts performed compared with the creator's normal content.
- Audience country. Ask for a screenshot of the creator's audience insights before you pay.
- Brand safety. Scroll back a few months.
Contacting Instagram creators: DM or email?
Email first, when there's one. Most creators who want brand deals list a business email or a contact button on their profile, and email is where they handle offers and contracts. DMs from accounts they don't follow can end up in message requests and get missed.
If there's no email, send a short DM asking for the best address for a paid partnership. Then keep the actual offer for email. Our influencer outreach guide covers what to write and when to follow up.
